A little bit about Joseph Pilates
Centering | Concentration | Control | Precision | Breath | Flow
Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. Small and sickly as a child, he quickly became determined to improve his physical ability. This led him on a path of self education, taking an interest in anatomy and many fitness disciplines. He read anatomy books, studied ancient Greek wrestling, gymnastics and boxing. He became enamored by the classical Greek ideal of a man balanced in body, mind, and spirit, and he began to develop his own exercise system based on this concept.
After moving to London in 1912, Joseph was placed in a concentration camp by British authorities during WW1. While in camp, he taught wrestling and self defence and realised the impact this made, both physically and mentally. After being transferred to a second camp, Joseph began refining the exercises he taught to his fellow inmates, referring to his work as “Contrology” – the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit.
We now call his technique PILATES. Migrating to America around 1925, Joseph met his wife Clara, who also took a keen interest in Contrology. They soon established a studio and many followers, who continue to carry on his legacy and are referred to as “The Pilates Elders”. Joseph passed away in 1967 and said himself, “people won’t understand the brilliance of my work for 50 years”.

If you prefer 100% attention then this is the class for you. Private sessions offer you a personalised class that is tailored to your specific goals and needs. FAQs & Activelife Policies
You’ve Got Questions - We’ve Got Answers
I have never done Pilates before, will it be suitable for me?
Pilates is suitable for anyone and everyone. Activelife's small group nature enables us to ensure that your exercises are suitable for you and are tailored specifically to your goals. As a new client, the first apparatus you will be introduced to will be the reformer along with the Pilates principles. The reformer's use of variable resistance springs allows you to perform resistive exercises in a safe and supported manner, whilst still challenging your fitness capabilities. Exercises can not only be executed on your back but also lying sideways, kneeling or standing depending on your fitness levels, also taking into account any injuries or concerns you may have.
What should I wear to the class?
We recommend that you wear comfortable, non restrictive clothing such as active wear. For hygiene and safety reasons we request the wear of socks, preferably grip socks - these can be purchased through Activelife Pilates.
Stay well hydrated in your class by brining a water bottle.
What is your cancellation Policy?
Due to the small group nature of Activelife Pilates classes we require 24hrs notice should you wish to cancel your class.
If you give less than 24hrs notice or do not turn up to the class, the full class fee will be charged.
